Bronx Zoo

We took Taylor to the Bronx Zoo on Monday. I took about 100 photos and am happy with about 20. Ugh! Well, here are some highlights...

Taylor tried to tickle the tiger through the glass!

Most of the animals were lazy because it was so hot - but the bears were actually playful.

We saw turtles! I am always happy to see them. And Taylor loved them too. She was also wearing her very cute turtle t-shirt.

And I took this photo because I am a Harry Potter fan!

Baby Elmo

We find out in a few days whether baby Elmo is a boy or a girl!

My scanner won't work!

I don't know what's wrong with my scanner! I had to move my desk last week because there was a very annoying leak right above my computer. (Of course the mysterious leak stops when the guy who takes care of the building showed up.) So I had unplugged everything and hooked it back up - but I can't get the scanner to function. I probably need to reinstall the software, which is on CD - and of course my CD drive is broken!
Not having much luck! :) I'll have to find some other things to post in the meantime!

West New York explosion

There was this crazy underground explosion yesterday in West New York. It happened right outside where my grandmother lived. It's rare when something that happens here actually gets covered in the local paper, let alone TV news.

More on Douglass

The Home News Tribune wrote this story about Douglass and what's going on there...

I usually don't post my scrapbook kits, but this one's the Friday Freebie at www.digitalfreebies.com! Posted by Picasa

Another one of my favorite places at Douglass is the chapel. But there are so many other spots - the bridge, the puddle, the library. The scholar's program, which was my favorite thing about Douglass, had its offices in the basement of the chapel.  Posted by Picasa

This is College Hall at Douglass. One of my favorite buildings on the campus. I wrote an article about it when I was on the staff at The Daily Targum. I had interviewed Dean Shailor and we wend up the rickety old steps to the top of top tower. It had looked like no one had been there in years. It was dusty and filled with cob webs. I wish Targum's online archives when back that far so I could post a link because it was one of my favorite articles. Posted by Picasa

Save Douglass College

I am so upset about this. Rutgers once again wants to get rid of Douglass College, the largest women's college in the U.S. and my alma matter. Douglass was an amazing and beautiful place. Even though it was part of the larger Rutgers system, it was a place where you could really feel at home and where the deans knew your name. We were surrounded by amazing women and we learned how to think and use our voices.

This is on the Save Douglass College Web site...
"We, the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College (AADC), are launching the Save Douglass College campaign to register our strong concerns with many of the proposals in the Recommendations of the Task Force on Undergraduate Education. In this plan, Douglass College as we know it would be eliminated. Please know that we could not and would not ever support recommendations that would eliminate Douglass College.

Since 1918, Douglass College has provided an educational environment committed to promoting the success and scholarship of women. It is the commitment of the AADC through this Save Douglass College campaign to ensure that the supportive learning environment of Douglass College remains an opportunity for the young women of today and tomorrow.

Douglass College has a strong sense of tradition, a global vision, and a history of supporting women who choose to lead in fields in which women have traditionally been underrepresented. Douglass College has been at the forefront of education for women as leaders in all areas, including the worlds of research, education, business, public policy, communication and community service."

If you went to Douglass or Rutgers or support women's education, please visit this site: http://savedouglasscollege.org/
You can send a letter to the Rutgers admins or your government reps to help!!!!

Here's another LO of Rocky from our trip to Liberty State Park. He was so excited there, but it was so HOT!!!! I don't think I've ever seen him pant like that. I'm having a sort of creative block lately. It took me forever today to work on this and I have another page in progress that I can't seem to get done. So instead of just staring blankly at the screen, I've been reading. I finished Harry Potter and I'm almost done with the Devil Wears Prada. Even the latter book has a Harry Potter reference, which I thought was too funny. Posted by Picasa

Rocky turned two last month and I've finally updated his web page ... photos at photos.yahoo.com/rmcabana. I'm also adding a section for Rocky's Scrapbook. Posted by Picasa

I think I'm going a little Harry Potter crazy. I have 200 pages left to go of book 5, which I'm re-reading for the 3rd time. Can't wait for the new one. We're having a Harry Potter party at RAKScraps too! Posted by Picasa

I got this certificate a few weeks ago from North Shore Animal League and I had to scrap it! I'm so happy to be sponsoring a dog! Posted by Picasa

Grandma and Aunt Eillen visited London soon after 9/11 and sent me this postcard. Even though a lot of people were afraid to travel at the time, they weren't going to cancel their trip because they thought they shouldn't let fear stop them. They faced delays and FBI screenings, but got there safely and had a great time. And where ever they went, they found support for Americans. When I heard the news about the bombings last week about London, I was so shocked and saddened. That day four years ago came back to me. I was mad, too, that something like this could still happen. Yesterday some arrests were made, and I'm so glad to hear that. I hope that will help bring some piece to the people of London and the loved ones of those who were lost. I am not a big fan of traveling, but London is once place I've always wanted to go to, and still do.  Posted by Picasa

Mom just went to Vegas again. And her friend Marie won't tell us what went on there! Mom did tell us that she was spotted walking down Las Vegas Boulevard with a crowd of other crazy Moose lodge members wearing balloon hats! Posted by Picasa
